  • Verimi relies on the proven infrastructure modules of its well-known ID Wallet to ensure the fast set-up of the BARMER offer
  • The digital identity for BARMER policyholders is provided in accordance with the gematik specifications at a very high security level and after corresponding approval

Berlin, June 29th, 2022. Following an extensive tender, BARMER has commissioned the providers T-Systems and Verimi with the implementation of the legally required digital identity for health insurance policyholders. From 2023 onwards, all health insurance companies must offer their members a secure digital identity that is equal and complementary to the electronic health card (eGK). With this fully digital proof, insured persons should be able to use all services, especially in connection with the electronic patient file, as well as the digital health services.

For the implementation, Verimi relies on the proven, multiply certified and approved infrastructure of the well-known Verimi ID Wallet and adapts the new solution specifically to the needs of BARMER and to the specifications of gematik. In addition, Verimi, together with its shareholder T-Systems, will take over the highly secure operation and continuous further development of the application over an agreed contract period of seven years.

“With the Verimi ID Wallet, we have pioneered in the German market how our users can conveniently use their personal identity data digitally at a high level of security,” says Roland Adrian, CEO of Verimi. “We can now use our know-how advantage and our proven infrastructure to offer BARMER policyholders a digital identity solution quickly and efficiently. We are proud to make an important contribution here to the rapid digitalisation of the healthcare system in Germany. “

Verimi implements BARMER’s digital identity as a lean and fully digital wallet for use via smartphone app and pure web solution. To ensure the greatest possible user-friendliness, the solution is completely embedded in the BARMER environment and in the use cases of the users. For example, BARMER policyholders will be able to conveniently access BARMER digital services and securely retrieve and manage their medical data via their smartphone at any time without having to use their electronic health card.

“Our goal is to provide BARMER policyholders with easy and secure access to our digital services. We want to introduce the digital identities as quickly as possible in order to once again live up to our pioneering role in the digitalisation of healthcare. With Verimi and T-Systems, we have two experienced partners at our side,” says Roland Bruns, Head of IT at BARMER.

Verimi and T-Systems are taking the individual components of the digital identity in the health sector through a gematik approval process for production, product and operation. The solution is designed in such a way that other statutory and private health insurance companies can also use the components as the basis of their offering. This makes it possible to achieve a high level of efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the implementation of the legal requirements.

“As a founding partner of Verimi GmbH, T-Systems helped design the Verimi ID Wallet from the very beginning and securely hosted it in the trust centre on the Open Telekom Cloud. It was a logical step to bundle our jointly created ID ecosystem assets and competencies for BARMER and make an integrated and innovative offer. ” says Dirk Backofen, Tribe Lead Self Sovereign Identities at T-Systems.
